Jurnee Takes Off On Her Road to Employment

Jurnee Hicklen, while in her last year in the Adult Community Transition (ACT) program with Long Beach Unified School District, had a goal to get a job in child development after graduation. We were excited to hear that she has successfully obtained an internship with Bright Futures Learning Center as a Child Development Teacher’s Assistant.

Expressing Herself: Adriana

“Adriana creates detailed whimsical line drawings, incorporating images of faces, animals and houses. Her work is translated beautifully into intaglio prints and carvings in ceramics.”

Adriana Homsi began receiving arts training, part-time, at the ECF Art Center in San Pedro. Her mother Barbara Homsi recalls, “She had always showed a talent for Picasso-type drawings. When I found out about the Art Center, I was thrilled.”

Adriana now also enjoys working in ceramics and printmaking. Adriana’s work is for sale at the Art Center along with that of other artists.

College 2 Career Students Recognized

January 2013

Students who are selected to attend the College 2 Career program at Long Beach City College have important responsibilities. They are required to enroll in a certificate or degree program, and work towards eventual employment after graduation. As they move into student housing, they learn to maintain their own student apartments, become mobile around the community, and work together with their newfound friends and roommates. 12 students kicked off the program in 2011, and six more have joined them in year two. While all of the students are making great progress, two have recently been recognized for outstanding achievement, with scholarship awards from Long Beach City College.
